Learning

Curriculum

The College provides a broad, comprehensive curriculum from years 7 to 12 within the following structure:

Year 7
A standard, compulsory program

Years 8-10 (Middle School)
A vertical elective system with core English, Maths and Physical Education and VET and VCE acceleration options.

Years 11 and 12
VCE, VCE-VM and VET options across Year 11 and 12.

> Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)
VCE is the main senior secondary certificate in Victoria. It recognises successful completion of secondary education and provides a valuable pathway to tertiary study and employment. A VCE program includes a number of different VCE studies (or subjects), with the majority consisting of four units that can be completed over the two years (a unit represents one semester or half a year of work). Units 1 and 2 are typically taken in Year 11, while Units 3 and 4 are usually completed in Year 12.

> Victorian Certificate of Education – Vocational Major (VCE-VM)
The VCE Vocational Major (VCE-VM) is a vocational and applied learning program that sits within the VCE.  It takes an ‘Applied Learning Approach’.  Applied learning involves students engaging in relevant and authentic learning experiences. It is a two year program over Year 11 and 12.  The VCE-VM prepares students to move successfully into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training, university through alternative entry programs or directly into the workforce.

> Vocational Education and Training (VET)
Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs come from the VET sector. Programs offered by TAFE institutions and other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and delivered by registered trainers. VET programs are offered in many areas via external RTOs and onsite in the areas of Sport and Recreation, Engineering and Furnishing.

Homework

Mount Beauty Secondary College expects students to further develop and consolidate their independent learning skills by completing home study tasks. Homework has a positive effect on learning and is an important part of reinforcing the concepts that are introduced in class. It also plays a significant role in building work ethic, self-discipline and responsibility.

Homework is set from Year 7.

REPORTS

Progress reports are completed in Week 4 and 8 of each term with end of semester reports completed at the end of Semester 1 and 2.

Conferences (formerly parent teacher interviews) occur at the end of Term 1 and Term 3.
