The Mountain Ear
    Term 3 Issue 29    October 17th 2003
PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
I am very pleased to inform parents and the wider community that the College now has its own internet site. Our internet address is mbsc.vic.edu.au. Please visit the site, and let us know what you think of it. You will find photos of students and their work, information about the College, advertisements for positions vacant, a copy of the College Charter, and a copy of the most recent weekly newsletter. The site is sure to grow over time, and we will endeavour to ensure it contains information of interest to students, parents and staff. If you have a suggestion for content you would like to see included on the web site, please make your suggestions to the General Office. The site has resulted from an enormous amount of effort by Mr Matthews, with assistance from students in his Year 11 Information Technology class.
The Victorian Cricket Association conducted a coaching clinic for fifteen of our year 7 and 8 boys on Wednesday. Rob McKenna , a Country Development Officer with the VCA, provided expert coaching. Despite losing the last twenty minutes of the clinic due to wet weather, the boys really enjoyed the session, and are looking forward to competing in the interschools’ Super 8 Competition in Wodonga in the near future.
Please remember the various important dates coming up in the next few weeks.
  • Information evening for VCE families : 22nd October
  • Information evening for families of students in years 7 – 9 : 28th October
  • End of year 12 classes : 24th October
  • End of year 11 classes : 21st November.

Parents and students are reminded that our College is a Sunsmart school. Each year in terms 1 and 4 our Sunsmart policy requires students to wear a broad-brimmed hat whenever they are out in the sun, including during sport or PE classes, and including recess and lunch breaks. Parents are asked to assist us by ensuring students attend school this term with an appropriate broad-brimmed hat.

2003 VCE STUDENTS

ADVICE TO YEAR 12 STUDENTS FOR EXAM STUDY PERIOD

RECOMMENDATION 1

STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO MEET WITH THEIR CLASSROOM TEACHERS PRIOR TO AND DURING THE EXAM PERIOD.

STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO ACCESS THEIR TEACHERS DURING NORMAL TIMETABLED CLASS TIME. Example: If you have Physics timetabled on Monday period 1 & 2 then you should see Mr Flower during that time.

RECOMMENDATION 2

DURING THE HOME STUDY PERIOD PRIOR TO EXAMS STUDENTS SHOULD SET A PROGRAM THAT IS SIMILAR TO A NORMAL SCHOOL DAY.

Example:

Monday School Timetable
Period 1 & 2 Physics
Period 3 & 4 English
Period 5 & 6 Studio Art.

On Monday you would study three areas ie Physics, English and Studio Art with breaks similar to a school day. Evening study could/should be added. This system ensures all study areas are given time.

NOTE: the above information is meant as a guide, obviously you would alter this strategy to suit your needs and your exam program.

MUCK UP DAY – THE MOVIE
A few years ago a year 12 student from Frankston was killed as a result of drink driving. This happened on the evening of what students term ‘ Muck Up Day’ which is usually the last day at school. Mount Beauty Secondary College students will be shown this film to alert them to the importance of responsible behaviour on this day.

TERTIARY ACCOMMODATION
If your son/daughter has applied for places at tertiary institution then it is time to contact the institutions concerned if you are considering accommodation on residence. Contact Mr Bottomley if you require further information on this matter.

VCE COURSE INFORMATION EVENING

A VCE Course Selection Evening for year 10 students will be held this coming Wednesday 22nd October. The purpose of the evening is to provide parents with an insight into the issues and processes in selecting a VCE Course for your son/daughter.
The evening will devote time to explaining the following:
What students must consider when choosing a VCE Program,
What is required to meet the graduation requirements for VCE?
What areas of study are available to students?
What constitutes an ENTER and how does it link with Tertiary Selection?
What is VET and how do students add it to their VCE Program?
What is VCAL?
Are “acceleration studies” relevant for my son/daughter?
Parents will be able to speak to staff and spend time planning their son/daughter’s VCE Program for 2004 and 2005.
Year 11 parents are welcome to come to the evening or make an appointment with Mr Bottomley should they wish to discuss their child’s course selection.

YEAR 11 MELBOURNE TRIP

This week students received a letter regarding a 3 day excursion to Melbourne. This excursion is a joint venture between Mount Beauty Secondary College, Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre and our generous sponsor Mount Beauty Rotary Club.
Parents are asked to discuss this with their son/daughter and, if interested, should return the form by Monday.
The payment for the trip should be handed to Susan by Friday October the 24th.
